Oklahoma City History

Oklahoma City is the capital of Oklahoma, a state in US. The city is one of the major holiday destinations of Oklahoma. Oklahoma City boasts many old museums, theaters and old towns which speaks of the rich history of the city. There are many interesting facts related to Oklahoma City history. The city was settled on April 22, 1889. This happened when 'unassigned lands' was opened for settlement. The city witnessed many land runs between 1889 to 1895. Land run is basically an event in which restricted lands are opened for settlement.

The first land run occurred on 1889 which led mass of peoples to settles in Oklahoma City. Oklahoma City experienced many historical events. After ten years of the first settlement, the city population had doubled.


This made the city as the capital city of Oklahoma. In the beginning of 20th century, the city become a major center for trade and commerce. During this time the city was getting popular for its oil fields. Before World War II, the city was a center for stockyard location. According to Oklahoma City history, the Oil was discovered in the city on December 4, 1928 after which the city changed drastically.

During the second World War, the city witnessed the heat of the war. But after the second World War the city started developing very fast. The city also become a major venue of a revolution in Civil Rights. On 1964, the city came into limelight because of Oklahoma City sonic boom tests which was a controversial experiment related to supersonic transport aircraft. This led to many turmoils in government sector. But after few year the city emerged out of this. With the onset of 1960's the city witnessed decline in all spheres. The city business and oil industry were in grave danger.
